Care and Maintenance Guide

Thank you for choosing Clock House Furniture.

Each piece of furniture is handcrafted in our workshop using traditional skills and high-quality materials. With the correct care, your furniture will provide many years of enjoyment.

General Care

  • Dust regularly using a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.
  • Clean spills immediately to prevent staining or moisture damage.
  • Never leave standing water on any surface.
  • Avoid abrasive cloths, scouring pads or harsh cleaning products.
  • Lift furniture when moving it rather than dragging it across the floor.
  • Always use protective mats, coasters and placemats where appropriate.

Wooden Furniture

All visible timber is professionally finished in our workshop using a durable acid-catalysed lacquer with a subtle 20% sheen, providing excellent everyday protection.

To keep your furniture looking its best:

  • Wipe with a soft cloth dampened with clean water or a mild diluted household detergent.
  • Dry immediately with a clean, soft cloth.
  • Never use abrasive cleaners, bleach, solvents or furniture polishes unless specifically recommended.
  • Do not use antibacterial or bactericidal cleaning products, as these can damage the lacquer finish over time.

Protecting the Finish

Wood is a natural material and reacts to changes in temperature and humidity.

To help preserve your furniture:

  • Use heat-resistant mats beneath hot dishes, serving plates and cookware.
  • Use coasters beneath drinks.
  • Avoid placing furniture in direct sunlight for prolonged periods.
  • Keep furniture away from radiators, wood burners and other direct heat sources.
  • Avoid excessive humidity or very dry conditions where possible.

Minor changes in colour and grain are completely natural and form part of the character of solid timber.

Glass Surfaces

  • Clean with a quality glass cleaner and a soft microfibre cloth.
  • Avoid abrasive pads or powders.
  • Do not strike the edges of the glass, as these are the most vulnerable areas.
  • Avoid placing extremely hot items directly onto glass surfaces.

Metal Components

Metal frames and fittings should be dusted regularly with a soft cloth.

If required:

  • Clean using a damp cloth with mild detergent.
  • Dry thoroughly after cleaning.
  • Avoid abrasive cleaners or steel wool, which may scratch protective finishes.

Upholstered Furniture

Our upholstered furniture may be covered in fabric, leather or traditional woven horsehair.

Fabric

  • Vacuum regularly using the upholstery attachment.
  • Blot spills immediately with a clean absorbent cloth.
  • Never rub stains, as this can spread them further into the fabric.
  • Professional cleaning is recommended for stubborn stains.

Leather

Leather is a natural product and will develop a rich patina with age.

To care for leather:

  • Wipe spills immediately.
  • Clean occasionally using a proprietary leather cleaner, following the manufacturer's instructions carefully.
  • Avoid excessive heat and direct sunlight, which may dry or fade the leather.
  • Do not use household detergents, solvents or antibacterial sprays.

Horsehair

Traditional horsehair upholstery should be treated in much the same way as fabric.

  • Vacuum gently on a regular basis.
  • Remove spills immediately.
  • Avoid soaking the material.

Wax, Food and Spillages

Should wax or dried food become attached to a tabletop:

  • Do not scrape the surface with knives or sharp implements.
  • Instead, soften the residue using a cloth dampened with warm water.
  • Carefully wipe clean before drying thoroughly with a soft cloth.

Environmental Conditions

Natural materials respond to their surroundings.

For best results:

  • Maintain normal household humidity levels.
  • Avoid positioning furniture in conservatories or rooms subject to extreme temperature fluctuations.
  • Rotate accessories placed on tabletops occasionally to allow the timber to age evenly.

A Natural Product

Wood, leather and other natural materials are unique.

Small variations in colour, grain pattern, texture and ageing are normal characteristics and should not be regarded as defects. These features contribute to the individuality and beauty of every handcrafted piece.
